Kevin Whitehead, Wilfred's son, recalls:
Well Dad worked on the original Queen Elizabeth of course, in fact he worked for Cunard most of his working life but he did not join the QE2 until 1969/70 and even then had periods working ashore which he never took too. From 1969/70 until 1986 he was a Public Room Steward normally on the open deck. After years of declining requests to become an officer after the Bremmerhaven refit he was forced to become a Public Room officer of some description when Cunard stopped being British and recruited rating staff through agencies from all over. When he retired in March/April 1988 he was still a Public Rooms officer.
